سُمي الشارب في العربية شاربا لملامسته السوائل. ෴
ولعل أصل الشارب هو الشفة العليا لمداخلتها الإناء حين الشرب ثم أطلقت اختصاصا على الشعر الذي ينبت عليها. ولازال المغاربة يسمّون الشفاه شوارب.
علما أن تسمية الشارب جاهلية وقد وردت في السُّنة وأن تطور هذا المعنى لم يختص بالعربية، فحتى طوارق الهقار يسمون الشنب أيضا إمسوان (مكان الشرب، أداة الشرب).
Etymologically, if both share a common origin, it's probably because when you drink a liquid it's your upper lip that embraces the vessel.
ردحذفThe meaning evolved, classically, to mustache as it touches that liquid. For the Maghrebis however شارب means only lip.
This evolution in meaning isn't only found in Arabic, but in other languages as well like Touareg's Berber "Imeswan" for moustache (place of drinking or place touched by drinking).
If we want to formulate otherwise, it's because we drink using our lips.
